New Photo of Jasper Newton Livesay and family

Can't wait to see the original of this one (this is a photo of a photocopy), it's the only photo I've seen of Jasper Newton Livesay and his family.

Left to right: Unknown (in the doorway), Peter Fountain Livesay with the gun over his shoulder, Harry Coe Livesay, Mary Agnes (Taylor) Livesay, Jasper Newton Livesay, Brown Livesay (the teen boy in front).  In the back row is Catherine (Katie) Virginia Livesay (can see her eyes and top of her head behind Jasper), Lillian Pearl Livesay and Joseph Livesay.  I guessing the year around 1905 and the location is Richwood, West Virginia.  Thanks to FD for the photo.

New Photo of Nanny Weber

Aunt Sis contributed this photo she had of Emma "Nanny" (Weber) Phelps. Thanks Aunt Sis!

My Mom also had a chance to chat with Sis about Nanny and her husband William C. Phelps. This is how Sis describes William C.: Tall and slim. Although she was small so he may have just appeared tall to her as a child. Calm, never heard him raise his voice. Not boisterous. A gentle person. Not the image of the person we have been led to think he was. She said she never saw him drink! Said that Nanny was the one who liked her beer. Said it was the empty beer bottles on the door step that upset her mother and caused her concern that people would thing of them as "topers".

Here are a few things she remembers about Nanny: Nanny told Anna to not let Sis, Jess and Nancy to eat the wild garlic that they loved to eat because she did not want kisses from garlic eaters.

Sis also remembered that "Nanny cried a lot after [her husband] died. She took good care of him while he was sick w/cancer."

Nanny took the Phelps kids to the zoo now and again but hated the monkeys. Would not go to see them.

Nanny had a sharp tongue. Expressed her feelings freely regardless of who's feelings might be hurt. She had diamonds and wore them. Sis has a pair of her diamond earrings and I remember Nancy had her engagement ring made from 7 or 8 small diamonds of Nanny's. She had her hair and nails done weekly.

Interesting to get impressions of Nanny from someone who remembers her well.

Prairie Lea Cemetery, Brenham, Texas

Had an opportunity recently to travel to Brenham, Texas to visit the graves of Moses and Cecelia (Inglesby) Baine.  Cecelia is the daughter of our Alicia McKiernan (first husband named William Inglesby, second husband our Joshua Phelps).  The Baine family plot spans two plots: 69 and 70.  I took photos of all the extant gravestones.  The interment listing for each plot is below (as well as I could make it out).  The interment records are available on http://www.prairieleacemetery.com/ but they are transcriptions, not the original records.  There are duplicate transcriptions, poor spelling, wrong dates, etc. in the transcriptions.  The interments with a * in front of them have photos located here.  Items in [brackets] were added by me or were alternative dates/names given in the interment records.  [NA] means the information was not availabe.

Bethlehem Steel Notebook - Thomas Price Jones

My grandfather, Thomas Price Jones, worked for Bethlehem Steel for many years.  His job had something to do with measuring the thickness and quality of the steel.  He kept a work notebook that I have finally gotten scanned in.  It's located here.  He wrote a lot about Union strife and walk-outs. He also noted accidents and one man who was killed.  There are lots of names mentioned, so if you know of a relative who worked for Bethlehem Steel in Dundalk, Maryland in the 1950's it may be worth a perusal.

Scanning is almost done!

I'm starting to upload the pictures and letters I've scanned to my Picassa albums.  I'll try to upload a couple of albums a week (there are thousands of documents/photos, so be patient)...

The first set are letters from the Aiken family. You can find the letters here.  The Aikens were friends of Margaret Millers and I speculate that W. George Miller was the "Walter Miller" that Margaret dated for a number of years.

Names mentioned in the letters: W. George Miller (brother of Martha Miller), Jesse E. Aiken, Martha (Miller) Aiken, Carolyn Aiken, Nelle Aiken, Elaine Aiken, Linda Aiken, Mary Lou Aiken, J. Buxton Aiken, Esther Aiken, Tommie Aiken, Carl Miller, B.O. Aiken, William H. Aiken

Here is an obituary for Jesse Edward Aiken I found on the Interwebs:

Catawba Valley Neighbor, Charlotte Observer, Charlotte, NC
June 4, 2004

Jesse Edward Aiken, 94 of Pinecrest, Hickory, died June 2, 2004 at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born April 2, 1910 in Littleton, NC, he was a son of the late Jesse Buxton Aiken and Nelle Jenkins Aiken.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 5, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Robert Shoffner.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Marshall and William Aiken; one sister Mary Barber; and one beloved uncle, Otis Aiken.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Miller Aiken of the home; four (Five)daughters, Carolyn Landress of Florida, Nelle Jacobson of Washington, Elaine Myers of Hickory, Linda Aiken of Florida and Mary Arthur of Quorn, England.
Bass-Smith Funeral Home is serving the family.

Off-Line for a Little Bit

I'm trying to make some headway on a major scanning project...I'm bound and determined to get all the Miller Letters scanned in, so I'll be off-line for a bit.
