ANOTHER DEATH FROM CHOLERA - Dr. Sanford DeWitt Phelps, a well-known physician, was found dead in his bead at his bed at his residence near H????dale, Pa., Wednesday morning.  he gad been a great sufferer from dyspopsia? for years. On his dressing-case was a vial ????? chloral, two-thirds of the contents which were gone. It is supposed that Dr. Phelps sought relief from his pain by the use of the drug and took too large a dose. He was born in Flatbush, N.Y. and was ?72 years old, after ?60 years of renumerative practice, he was forced to retire because of his complaint." Baltimore Sun, April 14, 1883

"Death of Royal Phelps. NEW YORK, July 31 - Royal Phelps died at half-past ten o'clock this morning at his residence in this city. He was the father of the first wife of Gov. John Lee Carroll, of Maryland. Mr. Phelps had been ailing since last June with an affection of the bladder. The father of Royal Phelps was a Presbyterian clergyman of the same name in the village of Seropronius, N.Y., where Royal Phelps was born on March 30, 1809. In early life young Phelps went to the West Indies and afterward entered a merchant's office in Venezuela where he settled and married. At the invitation of the firm Maitland, Comme & Co., of New York, he came to New York in 1847, since when he has been prominent before the public as a citizen and merchant.  Mr. Phelps was for many years connected with the Roosevelt Hospital as a trustee, with the Atlantic Mutual, Royal and other insurance companies as director. He was for nearly twenty years president of the Eye and Ear Hospital, and for many years vice president of the Chamber of Commerce. The arrangements for the funeral are under the charge of his son-in-law, ex-Gov, Carroll, who was present with him at the time of his death." Baltimore Sun, July 31, 1884

Phelps, M.D. was born in Sussex county Delaware, January 31, 1799.  His father Asabel? Phelps was a native of Connecticut and traced his lineage far back to the early colonial period. He was a revolutionary soldier and was severly wounded in the battle of Brandywine. Francis P. Phelps attended school in his native county and at fifteen years of age was sent to a classical school at Milford and afterwards to the academy at Lewiston, Delaware. [...] He was married in 1824 to Hanna, daughter of Dr. Jno.P. White of Lewiston, Del. [...] He also leaves two children surviving - Dr. Frank P. Phelps, Jr, who was a surgeon in the Union army, and Mrs. annie Wallace, wife of Col James Wallace of Cambridge [...]" Baltimore Sun, November 19, 1886
